A links page? That's so 1990s. Well, anyway...
Novels
and novelists
- Franz Kafka:
"The Burrow" is the title of a short story by Kafka. If you want
to know more, take a look at the Kafka
homepage, this selection of Kafka
links, or these pictures.
- Connie Willis: My favourite living author: Doomsday Book and Passage are amazing, relentless, structurally perfect novels. This is her official home page.
- Kurt Vonnegut: My favourite dead
author. One of the best pages is here,
or you can select one of these Vonnegut links
instead.
- Edward Gorey:
A surreal cartoonist, now dead. Visit the West
Wing, or take a look at this comprehensive bibliography.
- Neil Gaiman:
Writer of the Sandman graphic novelsthe most gripping series since
Watchmen. For more information, visit the
dreaming or the heart
of the dreaming.
Fun and games
- Zzap! 64:
This is the magazine (now deceased) that Kati and I used to edit. Amongst
other things it featured reviews of Commodore 64 and (briefly) Amiga games.
There are plenty of good nostalgia sites around: try the links on my Zzap!
page. For more about the current C64 scene, check out the excellent
Lemon, or take a look
at my own C64 links.
- Emulation:
If you didn't know already, there are plenty of programs which emulate
(on your PC or Mac) classic home computers, consoles and arcade systems,
along with their associated games and other software. A good general place
to start is Madjock's
site, but you should also check out Retrogames,
and The Vintage Gaming
Network. If you're only interested in arcade games / coin-ops, check
out the excellent MAME,
Raine, or Caesar.
- Computer games:
My all-time favourite arcade game is Robotron,
but I,
Robot comes a close second; the Universal Video Game List (UVL)
aims to chronicle every game ever released; and if you need help with your
beat 'em ups and shoot 'em ups, GameFAQs
is packed with hints, tips, cheats and walkthroughs.

- Encyclopaedia Mythica:
Everything you ever wanted to know about myth, legend, and effective search
engine design can be found here.
- Encyclopaedia Gothica: From absinthe
to X-Mal, this
site has it all. And more. Lots more. Including make-up tips. No, really.
- The Quotations Page: Need to know who
said what, to whom, and when? Frankly, I rarely bother, but when the itch
needs scratching, I visit TQP.
- How Things Work:
Discovering why I don't work would be more helpful to me, but the
secret of many a whatsit, gizmo and gewgaw is found here.
